Gas prices stink, but you already know that

May 21st, 2008 by Treena Shapiro

Lately, I’ve been less inclined to jump in the car just because I’m feeling restless, but otherwise I haven’t changed my driving habits much.

When you’re required to have a car for work, it’s hard to be a good citizen and catch the bus, as much as I’d relish sitting wiih a book in my hands instead of a steering wheel.

Today, I got almost all the way to work when I realized I’d forgotten my laptop. Another day, I might have been able to work around it, but not today.

Normally, in a situation like this I’d mourn the loss of time. Today, I was more saddened by the waste of gas.

On my way back, I decided it’s time to figure out some gas saving measures… beyond making sure I have everything with me when I leave.

YESSSSS gas prices are ridiculous! i pass this one gas station everyday on my way to work and i’ve watched the price go up 8 cents….since Sunday!!! it was $3.83 when i filled up, then monday it was $3.85. yesterday it was $3.87 and this morning the sign said $3.89! at this rate i’m wondering what my “breaking point” will be…the bus stops all look more crowded as it is (yet the traffic still seems to be its same bad self) and i wonder if it would even be worth the public transportation experience to join them? or if i should just suck it up and keep shelling out the $$ and work overtime!

munch is right. Every time I swing by Costco the price seems to be going up. I’ve noticed that some far off Aloha gas stations are only a couple of cents off of Costco’s gas and figuring that it might not even be worth it to wait in Costco’s line. If Costco wants to keep the gas market they need to make a significant price difference than other gas stations. The main thing, gas is getting out of hand. Can someone please explain why gas all of a sudden shot up soooo high? Have we depleted that much or is Saudi Arabia raising prices? What’s the haps? What is the US doing with all the gas we get from the Gulf and Alaska? The state also really needs to start building safer bike paths, like today. Oh, and they need to have more bike carriers on the bus too. I hate, hate, hate these gas prices. Sorry, I’m calm now.

Lately, I’m been thinking about using my car less. Got some information on catching the bus from Mililani to Salt Lake but I would have to make a transfer and would take over an hour. It takes me 1/2 hour to commute at 4:50 am, not much traffic that early…so da bus not a real efficient use of time for me. Then I thought about car pooling but the Mililani co-workers start later so I’m beginning to look for other people who I can carpool with…any suggestions out there? I looked at Craigslist but there weren’t any listings from Mililani to Salt Lake. I could be mistaken but I heard about some bad outcomes with the Craigslist carpool listings. I dunno, my previous buying and selling on Craigslist were very good though. Anyway, the gas prices is absolutely nuts.

me and the hubby are definitely trying to do everything possible to save on gas money/consumption. over the weekend i watched a special on brazil and how they were in the same situation as the US a few years ago and then switched over to some kind of sugar cane fuel. now, not only is it cheaper and more readily available, but its cleaner for the environment. some analyst say that the US could switch but the oil guys have too much control over our politicians…sad!! if the US started using the sugar cane fuel, that could help hawaii in two ways…cheaper, cleaner fuel and boost our economy with jobs like the golden days of sugar before!!
