Fifty hot dogs in 16 hours
May 28th, 2008 by Treena ShapiroAs I walked through Costco yesterday, I couldn’t help wishing that I was the mom in charge of paper goods.
Instead, I’m the mom who forgot to stake out a specialty for the fundraiser tomorrow and got reminder via phone from her son at 2:30 p.m.
By that point, the only things left to sign up for were hot dogs and Spam musubi.
“We’ll do hot dogs,” I told him quickly before someone else snapped them up and I was stuck making musubis all night.
As we drove to Costco, I asked my son how many he needed.
“Fifty?” he suggested with a shrug.
“FIFTY?”
“Uh, 25?”
It turns out that you can buy hot dogs in a 50 pack at Costco for less than $7. But, as in all hot dog related issues, you can only buy the buns in packs of 24.
“Do you want 22 extra buns or do you want two extra hot dogs?” I asked my son.
As I reached for more buns, he stopped me. “It’s okay,” he said. “We’re not the only ones.”
In the end, it turns out that the prospect of making 50 hot dogs before 7 a.m. was more daunting than the reality of it.
Still, it wasn’t as simple as paper plates.

i don’t think we’ll ever solve the mystery of the missing hot dog buns!! lol!! actually i think i saw something on unwrapped or something on the foodnetwork once, but i can’t remember the reason behind the 8 bun pack!! but in hawaii it’s all good…if you got chili and rice, people will eat hot dogs, no bun!

Tree…making 50 hotdogs doesn’t take that long. I can tell that you buy out for dinner a lot. When making mass hot dogs, get a big pot and fill it with water, let it boil and drop all fifty in the pot, let sit for 8-10 minutes and all 50 are done. Easy. BTW, good choice of hot dogs over spam musubis, das too much work.

Okay. The hot dogs were easy. They were cheap, too. I’m going to stop complaining. Compared to the cupcakes (messy) and the chili (expensive), hot dogs might be the way to go from here on in.
Unless I can sign up for tortilla chips. =)
